My Story

My favorite class at SFSU was the Product Development for Apparel course. This was one of my favorite courses to take as I have a keen interest in pursuing a product development position in the future. During this course I thoroughly enjoyed learning about what it takes to complete each step in developing a garment; from mood boards to tech pacs, to cost sheets and the process of choosing materials for garments, up until the final creation of the garment itself.

The biggest takeaway from my time as an ADM major would be that one of the most important skills as a merchandiser is to gain an extensive understanding of the target consumer when conducting business in the fashion industry. Ways to formulate a thorough understanding of the consumer is by utilizing consumer research methods, forecasting trends, marketing strategies, analysis of the current societal conditions and other forms of research in apparel and textiles.

The product development for apparel course required us to do a final project which entailed creating a clothing line and undergoing the steps of product development from start to finish. I believe this was one of the more impactful projects that I was able to accomplish in my educational career. With this project, I was able to work together with a wonderful team of my fellow merchandiser and designer classmates who had a similar vision in mind for developing a luxury sleepwear clothing line designed to enhance a woman’s overall sleep by incorporating natural mulberry silk fibers with embedded natural herbs to promote health benefits and sleep improvement. I reaped many skills from this project, one of which included understanding the complexities and beauty in creating a clothing line and being able to work together with like-minded yet unique merchandising individuals.

One designer that would be an honor to work for is the designer MINJUKIM. She is a Seoul-based fashion designer who combines elements of outstanding creativity and skilled craftsmanship in order to produce garments that encompass innovative silhouettes, femininity, while sparking a mood of happiness. I get inspired when I see her beautiful designs. My design aesthetic, even though I’m a merchandiser, aligns with the way she harmoniously infuses pops of color and creative forms of contour lines into her garments.
